I’ve been brushing up on my politics lately. Reading real news isn’t my forte, so I tend to get most of my information from people blogging about current events. Something inside me said maybe that isn’t the wisest idea, so I went to the next best place. Ahem. Admittedly I stuck mostly to the issues I care about: supporting abortion rights (Clinton, Obama, and Mike Gravel were equal), insistence on universal healthcare (Obama and Gravel), supporting gay rights (Gravel and Obama), anti “war on drugs” (Gravel) and speaking out against abstinence only sex education (Clinton). I tried to read about the republican candidates, but after 30 seconds a little part of me died inside.

Please let this fucking election be won by a democrat, but god help us all if it’s won by John Edwards- who’s "just not there yet" when it comes to dealing with same sex marriages. I’d happily support Obama or Clinton, but I’ve lived in America (and the south) long enough to know we’re surrounded by racist, sexist motherfuckers. If either of them is chosen as the democratic presidential candidate I don’t like our chances. I very much like Mike Gravel, I agree with nearly everything he stands for, but he’s probably too “extreme” to win. Fuck it sucks when extreme means anti-war, anti-nuclear weapons and pro-civil rights, but at least he’s old and white.

In any case I recommend watching the Democratic Youtube debates if you haven't already. This will be the most influential election so far in my life. The past couple of years have been the first time I've really felt the choices of my government effecting me in a very real way. I will never take voting for granted again.

Most of this week was spent trying to get up before 2pm. It’s a lot more difficult than it should be. There’s just so many things I want to do, like read about sewing. I’ve now decided sewing is the best thing in the entire world… Even though I’ve never sewn anything but a shoddy pillow when I was so young I barely remember it. I made it out of a navy bandanna. I’m inspired by the fusion of the practical and the creative in sewing. I can be as inventive as I want to be or I can follow a pattern. There seems to be a certain likeness to administrative tasks like filing which I’m disturbingly good at and, even more disturbingly, happy to do. I spent hours organizing my emails the other day and it was the highlight of my week.

So last weekend was the much anticipated 21st birthday celebration. A couple of friends (we’ll call them A and M for the sake of obscurity) accompanied my lovely husband and I to a Thai place nearby. Dinner was very tasty; A definitely won the game of ordering with a salmon dish of orgasmic proportions. We all stuffed ourselves until we felt slightly sick and I got to experience my last request for ID while underage.

We then returned to ours for my surprise birthday cake which was very yummy, and presents. After that we went clubbing. It was all in all a very good night, Mo and I have even come through surprisingly unscathed and hangover free as you can clearly see below. If you look that good at 9am you can't complain really.

We seem to have similar ideals when it comes to politics, except on drug issues. Part of my would like to ban drugs and alcohol all together, another part believes in free will and free choice. It's a conflict, I know.

Andreas: I don't really support a different approach to drugs because of personal choice. I just think the way we're handling it now (mandatory prison sentences etc) really isn't working.
